There are an estimated 250,000 plant species on earth. By the middle of this century 60,000 of these will be extinct and most of these have not yet been named. Fewer than 5,000 plants have been studied in depth and less than 1% of all plants have been studied for possible medical effects and medicinal applications.... For thousands of years plants have been the major source of medicine for mankind. In the Amazon rainforest many plants and herbs have been used for thousands of years to cure, treat and prevent many illnesses and diseases. Modern research also has unlock many new applications. Many potent phytochemicals (plant chemicals) in these plants and herbs have been identified and are used as such in the treatment. This database also contains information about medicinal plants from Southeast Asia, which are growing abundantly in Surinam. |
