PIRATINERA GUIANENSIS - SNAKEWOOD. Synonym: brosimum guianensis. Common name: snakewood, letterhout, letterwood, sneki udu, leopardwood, schlangenholz, bois serpent, gateado, palo de oro. Family: moraceae (mulberry family). The tree grows up to a height of 80'. The logs are 5' long with a diameter of about 6" (range is 4" - 14"). The bark and sap wood are removed. This is a rare, exotic, tropical hardwood with a snakeskin-like appearance. An extremely hard, dense wood (80 lbs / cu.ft) that turns - and polish well.
